Perfumer
Spyros Drosopoulos was a university psychologist until he left it all to make perfume. He founded the Amsterdam house Baruti, Greek for gunpowder, and makes all its perfumes himself.
He was born in the Netherlands, grew up in Greece and studied in Germany. He wrote his doctorate in psychology on memory and taught at the University of Amsterdam. In 2009 he took a beginners’ perfume class out of curiosity, and soon left the university. He founded Baruti in 2015. He also works on Scentronix, a project where computer algorithms help make perfumes.
Drosopoulos likes to put something unexpected in his perfumes, and he often starts from a personal memory. Chai was inspired by the milky spiced tea he came to love during his doctorate in Germany, and the smell of milk in it is what he’s proudest of. What he enjoys most is making the smell of a flower that can’t be taken from the plant itself, like the linden and lilac in Onder de Linde. Perverso, named after the German phrase pervers gut, smells of chocolate, hazelnut and dry tobacco. Everything he makes is unisex.
