Illustrated portrait of Zimo Luo, Shanghai perfumer behind Riso for Jijide

Perfumer

Zimo Luo

Zimo Luo stuck with Riso even when her colleagues had doubts. She is a perfumer at Apple Flavor & Fragrance in Shanghai, and Riso, which she made for Jijide, smells of warm rice and steam.

Who is Zimo Luo

She was born and raised in Shanghai. As a child she loved the plants, trees and flowers around her home and made her first “perfumes” by mixing water with whatever she found in the yard. In 2019 she moved to Paris to study perfumery at ISIPCA, and back in China she started work in Shanghai. Jijide met her online and saw that she had a good nose. Her male colleagues didn’t believe in Riso and preferred other options. She believed in it, and the only other woman in the department encouraged her to keep going.

Signature style

At Jijide they say Riso smells of today’s China because the perfumer who made it lives there. As in her childhood, she finds her ideas in what’s around her. Riso is warm, a little like a mantou, the Chinese steamed bun. Rice and soy sauce make it slightly salty.
