Perfumer
Nour Akoum is a Franco-Lebanese perfumer with her own lab in Beirut. For Jijide she made Grano, a green, earthy perfume that smells of wheat and bread from a French bakery.
As a child she found she could pick out single smells and describe them in detail. She studied chemistry at the American University of Beirut, then went to the ISIPCA perfumery school in Paris, which had long been her dream. There she became friends with Zimo Luo, who later brought her to Jijide. She worked in France, the Netherlands and Italy, then went back to Lebanon and opened her own lab. She had only just opened it when the Grano commission came in, so Jijide was her first client.
Besides her work for perfume houses, she makes perfumes to order in her lab. She has also spoken at an event about a new name for the perfumes long called oriental. Grano and Riso are a pair, and both are about taking shelter on a rainy day. That’s why Grano smells of damp grass and wet earth as well as a warm bakery.
