Illustrated portrait of Miguel Matos, Portuguese perfumer and writer known for his Calaj extraits

Perfumer

Miguel Matos

Portuguese perfumer Miguel Matos spent more than twenty years writing about art and culture. His perfumes have twice won the Art and Olfaction Award. For the Romanian house Calaj he makes dark, layered perfumes such as Transilvania.

Who is Miguel Matos

He worked for years as a journalist and editor, and wrote about perfume too. He has published books on art and on how we experience smell. He makes perfume on his own, in his lab in Almada near Lisbon. Besides Calaj he works for Bruno Acampora, Nishane and Sarah Baker, and he has his own line. He won the Art and Olfaction Award in 2020 for Young Hearts and in 2023 for Tabacco Smeraldo.

Signature style

Matos loves old, classic perfumes. His own often recall them, but they smell modern. He isn’t afraid of strong animal smells either, and he puts tuberose into his darker perfumes and his lighter ones alike. He likes to go back to the classic masculine pairing of lavender, leather and tobacco. Transilvania is one of his dark ones, with honey and leather.
