Illustrated portrait of Maxence Moutte, perfumer for Le Jardin Retrouvé

Perfumer

Maxence Moutte

Maxence Moutte first remade Yuri Gutsatz’s old perfumes, then started making his own. He is the perfumer of Le Jardin Retrouvé, and his perfumes are named after famous gardens.

Who is Maxence Moutte

He trained at Givaudan. As a young perfumer he came across Le Jardin Retrouvé in a Paris boutique and wanted to meet Yuri Gutsatz. That never happened, but years later, at a wedding, he met Michel Gutsatz and Clara Feder, who were about to revive the family house. In 2016 he became its perfumer. His first job was to remake Yuri’s perfumes as close to the originals as he could. He has released his own perfumes since 2021.

Signature style

Each of his perfumes smells mainly of one plant from the garden it is named after. In Mousse Arashiyama you smell moss and the damp bamboo forest of Kyoto, and in Violette Kew the violets of London’s botanical garden. They are more modern and lighter than Yuri’s.
