Perfumer
Milan perfumer Luca Maffei co-founded Atelier Fragranze Milano, a studio that works only for niche houses. He loves the scents of the Mediterranean and makes perfumes for Carthusia, Profumo di Firenze and Sasva.
He’s the son of Marco Maffei, a long-time executive at Symrise and IFF, so he grew up surrounded by fragrance samples and perfumers like Dominique Ropion. He studied economics in Milan, then went to Grasse to learn under Françoise Marin. After an apprenticeship with Vincent Ricord he worked with Maurizio Cerizza, who talked him into entering the Esxence contest. His Iris Magnifica made the final five. In 2011 he founded Atelier Fragranze Milano with his father, and in 2014 he joined the French Society of Perfumers.
For Carthusia he often takes a single Mediterranean plant, such as myrtle, broom or basil, and makes a perfume from it. A'mmare smells of the sea around Capri, of salt and rosemary. When he wants something warmer, as in Forbidden Words Bombay Gourmand for Sasva, he uses salted caramel, oud and vanilla.
