Illustrated portrait of Jean-Claude Ellena, Grasse perfumer and former in-house nose of Hermès

Perfumer

Jean-Claude Ellena

Jean-Claude Ellena, from Grasse, spent twelve years as Hermès’s in-house perfumer and created Terre d’Hermès. With his daughter Céline Ellena he made Flower Glyph for the Californian house Liis, a floral with blueberry and honeysuckle.

Who is Jean-Claude Ellena

He was born in Grasse in 1947 into a family of perfumers. As a child he picked jasmine with his grandmother, and at sixteen he started work at the Antoine Chiris essential oil factory. In 1968 he was the first student at Givaudan’s new perfumery school in Geneva, and in 1976 he made his first well-known perfume, First for Van Cleef & Arpels. He was a founding member of the Osmothèque scent archive and founded The Different Company.

Signature style

Ellena is known for simple, airy perfumes with few ingredients, where you can clearly smell each one. The perfumer Edmond Roudnitska was a strong influence on him. He also writes books about his craft, and he doesn’t wear perfume himself. Flower Glyph for Liis grew out of the close study of a flower.
