Perfumer
Le Labo’s Santal 33 is the work of Frank Voelkl, a master perfumer at DSM-Firmenich in New York. For Nissaba he made Grande Ile, a warm perfume of Madagascan spices and vanilla.
He was born and raised in Germany and had a keen sense of smell even as a child. He trained at ISIPCA and has been a perfumer for more than twenty years. Grande Ile won the Fragrance Foundation France prize for responsible innovation in 2023.
Voelkl knows how to make a perfume people want to wear every day, and many of his perfumes have sold very well. His scents are clean and modern, often warm and woody, and easy to wear. He likes to put one ingredient in the spotlight. In his first perfume it was the tiare flower, and in Santal 33 it’s sandalwood.
