Perfumer
Flavius Calaj used to sell other people’s niche perfumes, then founded his own house, Calaj, and became its perfumer. Today he makes perfumes for Calaj and for other houses, Necalli among them. His extraits are dense and long-lasting.
In Arad he ran NicheScent, a boutique that sold and imported only niche perfumes. He says going from a shop like that to a house of his own was just one step. He launched Calaj in 2020. Miguel Matos made its first perfumes, with Flavius as creative director. He never went to perfumery school, but spent years studying perfume and collecting it. The first perfume he worked on as a perfumer was Grande Genesys for the Grande brand.
He describes his perfumes as strong and long-lasting. Each starts from scratch, because he wants nothing inspired by other brands, let alone a clone. Some seem strange at first, he admits, but he says people come to love them after a few wears. It matters to him that they are made in Romania. The Last PH is a new version of Grande Genesys, made with plum palinka instead of ordinary alcohol.
