Perfumer
Christian Carbonnel is a Barcelona perfumer from the third generation of the Carbonnel perfume family. For some of his niche work he uses the name Chris Maurice, after his grandfather. He made the warm Saaqi for Sasva and the soft Guardian Angel for Caeleste.
His grandfather Maurice Carbonnel, a Frenchman, founded an essential oils company in Alicante in 1921, and it soon moved to Barcelona. Christian learned the craft in the family lab under his father Francisco. Today he runs Carbonnel S.A., where seventeen perfumers work, and in 2019 he set up C De La Niche for niche perfumery alone. His clients include Xerjoff, Nishane, Masque Milano, Zoologist and Amouage.
Carbonnel grew up around the family firm’s essential oils. His perfumes are rich, warm and full, but not heavy. He uses vanilla in very different ways. In Saaqi for Sasva, next to wine and tobacco, it smells dark. In Guardian Angel for Caeleste, with coconut and white flowers, it is light and soft.
