Illustrated portrait of Cécile Matton, Mane perfumer behind Piazza Affari for Milano Fragranze

Perfumer

Cécile Matton

Cécile Matton is a perfumer at Mane and designs jewellery too. For Milano Fragranze she made Piazza Affari, an aromatic perfume meant to smell like an elegant Italian gentleman.

Who is Cécile Matton

She was born in Paris and spent her childhood in Zaire, where the heat made every smell stronger. At about fourteen she decided to become a perfumer. She studied pharmacy, since many perfume companies then belonged to pharmaceutical groups, and trained at Givaudan’s perfumery school. Next came IFF in New York, and in 2007 she joined Mane. She made Baby Doll for Yves Saint Laurent, and in 2018 the editors of Cosmétique Mag named her Perfumer of the Year.

Signature style

She calls herself an artisan more than an artist, and says it’s the work of making a perfume that matters to her. She likes simplicity and things you can touch, such as flowers, wood, metal and stone. Her favourite ingredient is nutmeg, and above all she loves green chypre perfumes. She usually has ten to twenty projects on the go at once. Piazza Affari, dedicated to the Milan stock exchange, ends dry and woody.
