Illustrated portrait of Antoine Lie, independent perfumer and founder of the Paris studio ALOE

Perfumer

Antoine Lie

French perfumer Antoine Lie co-created Armani Code, and today he runs his own studio, ALOE, in Paris. For Carl Kling he made Clary Fig and Fig Nuit, and for Carthusia the Intenso line.

Who is Antoine Lie

Born in Strasbourg, he studied chemistry and then moved to Grasse, where he trained at the Jean Carles school and learned the trade from Jean Guichard. He spent about thirty years in France and the US working for Givaudan, IFF and Takasago. He was already speaking openly about the limits of the big perfume companies in the late nineties, and in 2018 he left them. At ALOE he makes bespoke perfumes and chooses his own projects. He also advises Atelier Fragranze Milano.

Signature style

Lie likes strong-smelling ingredients and doesn’t tone them down. One plant is often what you smell most in his perfumes. He takes his time, and he worked on the fig perfumes for Carl Kling from 2022 to 2024. That work became the green Clary Fig and the darker Fig Nuit. In the Intenso line for Carthusia, each perfume is stronger than usual and devoted to one plant, myrtle, broom or basil.
